Diet & Food
Can I eat chicken broth during prep?
Yes, clear chicken broth (strained, with no noodles, vegetables, or solid pieces) is typically allowed during your clear liquid diet. Avoid cream-based soups. Check with your doctor if the broth contains any coloring that concerns you.
Is Jello okay to eat?
Yes, plain Jello (gelatin) is generally allowed as long as it is not red, purple, or blue. Stick to yellow, green, or orange flavors. Avoid any Jello with fruit pieces or toppings.
Can I drink coffee?
Black coffee (without cream or milk) is usually permitted during your clear liquid diet. Some doctors prefer you avoid caffeine altogether, so check your specific prep instructions. Never add creamer, milk, or sugar substitutes that make the liquid cloudy.
What about sports drinks and electrolytes?
Clear sports drinks like Gatorade are usually fine and can help maintain electrolytes. Avoid red, purple, and blue colors. Many patients find mixing their prep solution with a clear sport drink improves the taste.
When do I stop eating solid food?
Most prep protocols require you to switch to a clear liquid diet the day before your procedure. Some doctors recommend starting a low-fiber diet 2-3 days before. Follow your specific doctor's instructions for timing.

Symptoms
Is nausea normal during prep?
Mild nausea is common, especially when drinking the prep solution. Try drinking it cold, using a straw, or sucking on a lemon wedge between glasses. If nausea is severe or you are vomiting and unable to keep the solution down, contact your doctor.
How do I know if my prep is working?
Your bowel movements will gradually become more liquid and lighter in color. A successful prep produces clear or light yellow liquid with no solid material. GentlePrep's stool clarity tracker helps you monitor this progress.
I feel bloated and uncomfortable. Is this normal?
Bloating and cramping are common during prep. Walking around, applying a warm compress to your abdomen, and drinking the solution slowly can help. Severe pain or persistent vomiting should be reported to your doctor.
What if I can't finish the prep solution?
Try to drink as much as you can. If you truly cannot finish, contact your doctor's office. An incomplete prep may result in a rescheduled procedure or a less effective exam. Your doctor may adjust the timing or offer an alternative.

Timing
When should I start my prep?
Timing depends on your specific prep protocol and procedure time. Most split-dose preps start the evening before your procedure, with the second dose early in the morning. GentlePrep calculates your exact schedule based on your procedure time.
How long does the prep take?
Most people spend 4-6 hours actively prepping (drinking solution and using the bathroom). The entire clear liquid diet period is typically 24 hours. The process usually calms down within 2-3 hours after finishing the last dose.
What is a split-dose prep?
A split-dose prep means you drink half the solution the evening before and the other half the morning of your procedure. Studies show split-dose preps produce cleaner results. Most doctors now recommend this approach.

Medications
Should I take my regular medications?
Most medications can be taken as usual. However, blood thinners (warfarin, Plavix, Eliquis), diabetes medications (insulin, metformin), and iron supplements often need to be adjusted or held. Always confirm with your doctor at least a week before your procedure.
What about blood thinners?
Blood thinners typically need to be stopped several days before a colonoscopy. The exact timing depends on the medication. Your gastroenterologist and prescribing doctor should coordinate this. Never stop blood thinners without medical guidance.
Can I take my diabetes medication?
Diabetes medications, especially insulin and sulfonylureas, usually need dose adjustments during the clear liquid diet period to prevent low blood sugar. Metformin is often held the day of the procedure. Contact your doctor for personalized instructions.

General
Why is colonoscopy prep important?
A clean colon allows your doctor to see the lining clearly and detect polyps, which are precursors to colon cancer. Poor prep can lead to missed polyps, a longer procedure, or the need to reschedule. Good prep directly impacts the quality of your exam.
How often should I get a colonoscopy?
For average-risk individuals, screening is generally recommended starting at age 45, then every 10 years if results are normal. Higher-risk individuals (family history, previous polyps, inflammatory bowel disease) may need earlier or more frequent screening. Follow your doctor's recommendations.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
Most colonoscopies use moderate (conscious) sedation, which means you'll be drowsy but may be partially aware. Some facilities offer deep sedation (propofol). You'll need someone to drive you home afterward regardless of sedation type.
